The Hanharts handled the technical preparation, chemical etching, and physical pressing of the stones to yield the final printed pages.
The firm won a prize medal at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and was internationally famous for its mastery of complex tonal layering and high-quality chromolithography. They were the primary choice for premier scientific journals, sheet music covers, and fine art publications of the era.
The firm was chosen by Westwood,
to print the lithographs prepared by P.C. Berjeau
of Westwood's drawings for illustrations in his monographs on Lepidoptera.
