Father Gustaaf Hulstaert was born in 1900 in Melsele, Belgium. He became a Belgian missionary who served in the Belgian Congo from 1925 to his death in 1990.

Before going to the Congo, he began collecting Lepidoptera sent by other missionaries from the East Indies and New Guinea. He wrote a number of monographs about the new species that came his way, and about many he collected in the Congo.

He wrote a large section about Lepidoptera in Fascicle 191 of Philogene Wytsman's famous Genera Insectorum, for which he drew illustrations which were reproduced using photolithography by the Brussels printers V. Verteneuil & L. Desmet.
