Sauber was highly regarded in the scientific community not just for his meticulous micro-lepidopteran research, but also for his exceptional skill as a draughtsman. In historical accounts and obituaries published by contemporary scientific bodies, such as the Verhandlungen des Vereins für Naturwissenschaftliche Unterhaltung zu Hamburg, they explicitly noted that he personally executed the highly detailed technical drawings and colorings of butterfly and moth specimens with absolute reliability and precision.

His drawings were converted to lithographs for printing by Wilhelm Winter (1844-1900) at Anstalt von Werner & Winter, chromo-lithographers based in Frankfurt.

The lithographs were printed by C. W. Kreidel’s Verlag, a prominent German printing and publishing firm founded in Wiesbaden in 1843 by the publisher and bookseller Christian Wilhelm Kreidel (1817–1890). The company specialised as chromo-lithograph and letterpress printers, of illustrations for academic, scientific, and natural history publications, and in particular printing the illustrations in publications by Carl Semper:
